  • 1. Does it cost anything to use the NYTimes iOS app?

    The NYTimes application is free to download and install, and includes some free content. However, to get unlimited access to all sections, you must become a digital subscriber. For more information, please see the Digital Subscriptions FAQ.

    Please note that in the absence of a Wi-Fi connection, the NYTimes iOS application uses your device's cellular network connection to access and download content. Please check with your carrier to see whether you will be charged for usage, especially while traveling.

  • 2. Do I need to register with The New York Times to use the NYTimes iOS application?

    No. You can download the NYTimes iOS application and access some content without registering. However, certain features require registration, like saving articles to read later. Full access requires registration and a subscription. If you have already registered with NYTimes.com, you can use the same username and password to log in to the app.

  • 3. What devices will the NYTimes iOS application work on?

    The NYTimes iOS application works on any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch with iOS 9.0 or later. The iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPod Touch 5th generation, iPad 2, iPad 3rd and 4th generation, iPad mini, and iPad Pro are compatible with iOS 9.0. The most up-to-date version of the NYTimes application will not work on devices which are not compatible with iOS 9.0. If iOS 9.0 is not available for your device, you can continue to use an older version of the app. However, we will not be able to offer you technical support.

  • 4. I purchased a subscription through iTunes but I still cannot access any locked NYTimes content — what should I do?

    If you have already purchased a subscription but still cannot view all content (or locked content), you can easily restore your iTunes purchase through the app.

    First, verify that your purchase was successful — you should have received a confirmation email from iTunes. If you attempt to make the purchase again, iTunes will inform you that you already have a subscription. Next, check that you are using the correct NYTimes.com login information.

    If following the steps above does not resolve the problem, open the NYTimes app and go to Settings by tapping the settings button on the bottom toolbar. Make sure that you are signed in to the correct NYTimes.com account and tap the Restore Existing Subscription button. Restoring your subscription will not result in any additional charges. If the problem persists, you can contact Customer Care.

  • 5. How do I view my subscription details?

    To view your subscription details and benefits, tap the Settings button on the right side of the Sections list. Your subscription details will be listed below your email address. If you don't see your email address, you will need to log in or create an account.

  • 6. How do I save an article?

    You can save an article by adding it to the Saved for Later list while you are logged in to your NYTimes.com account. You can access saved articles at any time from any of your devices.
    To add an article to the Saved for Later list, open the article and tap the Save icon in the top right corner. To remove an article, tap the Save icon again. You can also save or unsave an article from the section front in which it appears.

  • 7. Can I look up the definition of a word in the NYTimes app?

    Yes. To look up the definition of a word, hold your finger down on the word. When you release your finger, tap Look Up. If you are on iOS 10 and you have not yet selected a dictionary for your device, you will need to visit your device settings, tap General, and go to Dictionary to select a dictionary to use.

  • 8. How do I check the version of iOS on my device and the version of my NYTimes app?

    To check the version of iOS on your device:

    Open Settings on your device, tap General, then About. On the About page, scroll to Version. The NYTimes app requires iOS 7.0 or later.

    To check the NYTimes app version:

    Within the NYTimes app, go to the app settings from the right side of the Sections title bar and tap About. The app version must be 4.0 or later to take advantage of the features included with iOS 9.0.

  • 9. I can’t find my NYTimes app – where is it?

    Your NYTimes app may be located in the Newsstand folder on your device. If you upgraded your NYTimes app to 3.0 or later and your device has iOS 7.0 or later, your Newsstand folder will have a colorful icon with images of news, travel, art and sports publications.

  • 10. Can I move the NYTimes app out of the Newsstand folder?

    Yes, if you have updated your device's operating system to iOS 9 or later. On iOS 9, Newsstand has been replaced with a regular folder called Newsstand that you can move apps in and out of.

    To move the NYTimes app out of the folder, press and hold it until it begins to wiggle, then drag it to any spot on your home screen. Once you've placed the app on your screen, press the home button on your device to save the changes.

  • 11. How do I turn on breaking news notifications and alerts?

    The NYTimes app provides breaking news notifications which allow you to stay on top of major news events even when the application is closed. You can also receive even more notifications about business, New York, politics and sports. Please note that these additional alerts do not replace breaking news notifications. For example, you may still receive a breaking news alert that is about politics, even if that topic is off in the Additional Alerts section.

    In the NYTimes app, tap the bell icon in the top right corner of your screen. Make sure that Breaking News Alerts are on. Then open the in-device Settings app. Tap Notification Center, then tap NYTimes. Turn on Show on Lock Screen, then select Banners or Alerts. You can also further customize how you receive your alerts here.

    In the NYTimes app, tap the bell icon in the top right corner of your screen. Make sure that Breaking News Alerts are on. Select the additional alerts of your choice.

  • 12. How do I browse between sections?

    To browse between sections, tap the hamburger icon (three lines) on the top left corner of your screen to open the section list and choose a section. You can also swipe left or right to move between sections. To read an article, tap the headline or anywhere on the introductory text for that article. Tapping the back arrow in the top left of the article view brings you back to the section front. Swiping left and right in the article view brings you to the other articles in that section.

  • 13. How do I edit the list of sections and blogs in the NYTimes app?

    You can control how sections and blogs are ordered from the Sections list by pressing down and holding on the section name you would like to move, then dragging it to the desired place. All sections can be moved except Top Stories; sections cannot be removed.

  • 14. How do I update content?

    Content will be updated automatically early each morning, as well as each time you open the app and periodically while you use the app.

    To update manually, pull down on any section front. You must leave the NYTimes app open while your content is updating. If the connection is interrupted for any reason, either to use another application or to receive a phone call, you may need to relaunch the app and restart.

  • 15. My NYTimes iOS app won't load when I try to upgrade to a new version. What should I do?

    If you are experiencing difficulties with an upgrade, please delete the NYTimes app, reboot your device and reinstall the app in iTunes. To remove the app, touch and hold the NYTimes application icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the X in the corner of the icon, then confirm the deletion in the window that appears. If you are still having problems after deleting and reinstalling the app, please contact us.

    You can share articles from the NYTimes app. To share an article, open the full article view and tap the share icon in the top right corner.

    If you are using iOS 9.0 and want to use a sharing tool other than those suggested, scroll to the end of the list and tap More. Turn on the additional sharing tool of your choice.

  • 17. How do I read comments on articles in the NYTimes app?

    You can read comments on some articles in the NYTimes app. Articles with comments will have a comment icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Tap the comment icon to read all comments, NYT Picks or Reader Picks.

    Please note: You cannot submit comments in the NYTimes app. Please visit our website to submit comments.

  • 18. How do I change the size of text in the NYTimes app?

    To change font size within the app, open the Settings menu by tapping the hamburger icon (three lines) on the top left corner of your screen to open the section list and then tap the gear icon. Tap Display Settings, deselect Use System Text Size and you can then drag the slider to the left to decrease the font size and to the right to increase the font size.

  • 19. Can I use the app if I'm not connected to a Wi-Fi network and I don't have cellular coverage?

    If you are logged in as an NYTimes subscriber, the NYTimes iOS application will store content locally on your device. Once you have completed the sync process, you will be able to access stored and saved content, even if Airplane Mode is activated or you do not have cellular network coverage.

    Please note: only articles and images that have been fully downloaded will be available for offline reading and that no On NYTimes.com search results will be available while you are offline.
