This year, retailers and restaurant chains have closed or will close hundreds of stores.

Some companies are closing underperforming stores. Others, like Rite Aid, Express and Red Lobster, are in the midst of Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

And other chains have closed for good.

Tijuana Flats - 11

The Central Florida fast-casual Tex-Mex chain announced that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and has closed 11 of its restaurants.

Applebee’s - 25 to 35

Dine Brands Global will be closing 25 to 35 Applebee’s locations across the U.S. this year, according to Today. Applebee’s president Tony Moralejo revealed the figure during a fourth-quarter earnings call on February 29, Today reported.

Burlington - 39

Burlington is closing 39 stores, according to CBS News.

Sleep Number -40

Sleep Number plans to close 40 stores, according to CBS News.

Red Lobster - dozens

Red Lobster temporarily closed 87 locations across 27 states, with some of them having their kitchen equipment up for auction via an online restaurant liquidator, according to USA Today. Then in June, Red Lobster released a list of dozens of more possible closures, according to CNN.

The reports said the following restaurants in Pennsylvania might close:

  • 2040 Edinboro Road, Erie
  • 935 Wayne Ave, Chambersburg
  • 425 W. DeKalb Pike, King of Prussia
  • 4766 McKnight Rd., Pittsburgh

The company has also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Sam Ash Music - 42

The music retail company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is closing all of its stores, including two in Pa.

  • 139 E. DeKalb Pike in Upper Merion Township (King Of Prussia), Montgomery County
  • 1887 Franklin Mills Circle in Philadelphia.

Rubio’s Coastal Grill - 48

California-based Rubio’s Coastal Grill filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after closing 48 of its restaurants in the Golden State. The company said it filed for bankruptcy to facilitate the sale of the business.

The Body Shop - 51

The Body Shop, a beauty and cosmetic chain, ceased all of its US-based operations as of March 1. The Body Shop’s U.S. operation was given no notice of the Body Shop’s U.K. company’s February administration filing and was forced into Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to RetailDive. The company closed 51 U.S. stores, according to CBS News.

Walgreens

Walgreens plans to close 77 stores, according to CBS News

Express - 95

In April, clothing retailer, Express Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and said that it planned to close 95 stores.

The three stores closing in Pennsylvania were located at:

  • 1521 Walnut St. in Philadelphia
  • Fashion District Philadelphia at 901 Market St. in Philadelphia.
  • 2300 E. Lincoln Highway in Middletown Township, Bucks County, near Langhorne

Macy’s - 150

Macy’s announced earlier this year it plans to close 150 stores by 2026.

7-Eleven - 272

7-Eleven plans to close 272 stores, according to CBS News

CVS Pharmacy - 300

CVS Pharmacy announced in 2021 that it would close 900 stores. The first 300 store closings in 2022 were followed by 300 closings each in 2023 and 2024.

99 Cents - 371

California-based 99 Cents Only Stores closed all 371 of its stores, according to the Associated Press. Dollar Tree purchased 170 of them while Ollie’s Bargain Outlet purchased 11 of them.

Rite Aid - 459 (Since October 2023)

Since October, the company has announced in bankruptcy filings the closings of 459 stores, including 60 locations in Pennsylvania:

Dollar Tree — the owner of Family Dollar — announced in March that it will close 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of 2024. The company also announced it plans to close an additional 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores over the next several years at the end of each store’s current lease term. This month, Dollar Tree announced that it initiated a formal review of strategic alternatives for the company’s Family Dollar business segment, which could include a potential sale or a spin-off among other options.
