How do I find out who owns a domain? ›

The most direct way to find out a domain's ownership is through a search of WHOIS databases, which provide detailed information on the current ownership of websites of all kinds.

WHOIS (pronounced as the phrase "who is") is a query and response protocol that is used for querying databases that store an Internet resource's registered users or assignees. These resources include domain names, IP address blocks and autonomous systems, but it is also used for a wider range of other information.

Go to lookup.icann.org. In the search field, enter your domain name and click Lookup. In the results page, scroll down to Registrar Information.

The companies that own them. Your Internet Service Provider has DNS servers they provide to you for resolving Internet names. Anyone that provides internet services has DNS servers. Companies that have private networks commonly have their own private DNS servers to resolve DNS names to internal company resources.

By exploring the website, investigating WhoIs, and contacting the registrar you can search for the domain owner. If your search fails, consider alternatives such as alternate spellings or domain extensions.

When you register a domain, we check the contact info that you give in your domain's registration settings. We send a verification email to the registrant contact email address of your domain. This verification is needed from the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Domain names are typically broken up into two or three parts, each separated by a dot. When read right-to-left, the identifiers in domain names go from most general to most specific. The section to the right of the last dot in a domain name is the top-level domain (TLD).

One quick way to check for the availability of a domain name is to do a simple web search. Type in the name you want to use, including the top-level domain, or TDL extensions, such as .com or . net. That can reveal whether the name is currently in use, and your search may even provide some suggested alternatives.

The ICANN registration data lookup tool gives you the ability to look up the current registration data for domain names and Internet number resources. The tool uses the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) which was created as a replacement of the WHOIS (port 43) protocol.

On the Whois Search Results page, locate the Registrar entry. This entry lists your DNS hosting provider, the DNS provider who owns the name server for your domain.
