Summary Job Summary The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is seeking a Professional Research Assistant to participate in the development and use of custom instrumentation to make atmospheric measurements for climate and air quality research.
This position is located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) in Boulder, Colorado. The selected candidate will work in close cooperation with the research staff of CIRES and the NOAA CSL Atmospheric Composition and Chemical Processes (ACCP) group on a range of measurements including remote sensing of wildfire properties from drones, trace gases including ozone and carbonyl sulfide from high altitude research aircraft in the stratosphere, and fine and coarse mode atmospheric aerosols. Duties of the position include working on mechanical and electrical modifications to improve existing instrumentation, calibration and preparation of instruments for deployment and support for measurements in the field. The measurements made by the ACCP group using these instruments are important for addressing issues as far ranging as: climate change, the ozone layer, and the potential impacts of geoengineering on the atmosphere. The position will involve domestic and international travel to support instrument operation during field deployments (typically up to a month at a time, once or twice a year).
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Who We AreAt CIRES , more than 950 environmental science professionals work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. CIRES has partnered with NOAA since 1967, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, and more. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.
The mission of the NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) is to advance scientific understanding of the chemical and physical processes that affect Earth’s atmospheric composition. CSL’s vision is a nation that has the needed scientific understanding and information about atmospheric composition to make optimal decisions for the well-being of current and future generations. The successful candidate will work in a supportive environment in the Atmospheric Chemistry and Chemical Processes group of CSL. (https://csl.noaa.gov/groups/csl6/)
