The Importance of Eating Protein

Protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass, supporting your weight management goals, and providing long-lasting energy. By incorporating protein-rich foods into your breakfast, you can fend off hunger cravings and stay focused until lunch. If you're looking for more high-protein breakfasts, you can also try my high protein overnight oats, high protein scrambled eggs with cottage cheese, or 3-ingredient banana protein pancakes.

This healthy coffee protein shake is a great option for breakfast and will give you a boost of energy and satisfy your hunger. It's also a good pre-workout drink. You can also try my protein coffee recipe (iced or hot). The caffeine will make you feel more alert and will improve your performance during exercise. Ingredient notes and substitutions. See recipe card at the end of the post for full recipe details.

  • Iced coffee- I like to use cold brew coffee because of its smooth flavor. You can buy bottled cold brew or cold brew concentrate at the grocery store or make homemade cold brew. You can also use brewed coffee or espresso that you've cooled in the refrigerator. You can even use instant coffee.
  • Almond milk- you can use unsweetened plain or vanilla almond milk or any milk of your choice like oat milk or dairy milk; you can even make your own almond milk.
  • Banana- use a frozen banana to add creaminess to the smoothie; I like to keep peeled, frozen bananas in my freezer to use in smoothies.
  • Peanut butter- you can substitute almond butter or sun butter; you can also use peanut butter powder.
  • Protein powder- I like to use vanilla protein powder, however you can use chocolate protein powder for a mocha flavor. Use a protein powder that you like the flavor of.

Chef's Tips

  • I like to use cold brew coffee because it has a smoother, less acidic flavor profile than traditional iced coffee. You can make homemade cold brew or buy cold brew coffee or cold brew concentrate at the grocery store.
  • If you have any leftover brewed coffee, you can freeze it in an ice cube tray and then add the coffee ice cubes to the smoothie instead of regular ice cubes. This will add more coffee flavor without diluting it.
  • I typically use vanilla protein powder in this shake but if you prefer a mocha flavor, try using chocolate protein powder.
  • Adding a frozen banana to this coffee protein smoothie makes it cold and creamy. If you have extra bananas, peel them and store them in the freezer to use in smoothies.
